PRESENT CALL DEADLINE: 31th December 2020 23:59
GENERAL
This contest intends to reflect on the strength of photography as an inquisitive instrument for architecture, searching for new talents and awareness towards photography and architecture both in Portugal and abroad, in order to raise a wider appreciation for our architectural, cultural and intellectual inheritance and to promote the photography platform scopio Network.
Visual Spaces of Change is the main theme of the current cycle of scopio Magazine.
We are interested in original projects where photography is explored as a significant research instrument for building critical and innovative views on architecture as an extended field of knowledge that operates within larger systems, with cultural, artistic, technical and historical dimensions. Visual Spaces of Change: Unveiling the Publicness of Urban Space through Photography and Image is the focus of the present call and the challenge is to have contemporary photography projects that explore urban change and architectural spaces, producing visual synthesis about how architectures, places and spaces are used and lived, rendering visible aspects which are difficult to perceive without the purposeful use of photography.
Visual Spaces of Change: Unveiling the Publicness of Urban Space through Photography and Image aims to promote the awareness and reflection upon Architecture and Art, namely documentary photography in regard to its conception as an instrument to question the universes of Architecture, City and Territory. The theme chosen for this call focuses on the contemporary transformations of the public space: “Visual Spaces of Change: unveiling the publicness of urban space through photography and image”. Proposing to explore the potential of Photography as a resourceful tool to research and to reflect upon and render visible the emergence of new collective experiences in the social space, being the focus on Documentary and Artistic Photography for addressing crosscutting issues that are shaping contemporary changes in cosmopolitan territories. The intention is to render visible aspects of urban change, as well as how architectures, places and spaces are used and lived, crossing and shifting traditional boundaries for expanding the capacity of institutions to participate in the public domain. In this sense, we aim to receive contemporary photography projects that contribute to critically thinking architecture as an integrative field of knowledge with historical, cultural, social, economic and political dimensions, exploring photography as a dynamic process of discovery and reflection that incorporates interpretive, artistic and even fictional aspects of these multiple dimensions.
VIEWFINDER is used to publish the projects within the contest and, in doing so, offers more autonomy and a publication space for the editorial content that reveals new talents and awareness towards the universes of photography, architecture, city and territory both in Portugal and abroad, recognising that past published photography projects have significantly captured the interest of both specialised and general public, while also building new collaborations giving more freedom and responsibility to their Editors with the objective of creating increased synergies with them.
